Numeral Identification

This month I’m focusing on Numeral Identification.

Here are the Minnesota state standards for numeral identification:
  • Kindergarten:  0-31
  • Grade 1:  up to 120
  • Grade 2: up to 1000
  • Grade 3: up to 100,000
  • Grade 4:  thousands to thousandths
  • Grade 5:  millions to millionths

One great tool to use is place value or arrow cards.  You can find printable cards here http://www.kentuckymathematics.org/resources/tools.asp (Scroll down the page to “Arrow Cards.”  You purchase cards here http://www.eaieducation.com/Product/530698/Place_Value_Arrows_Student_-_6_Sets_of_27.aspx

Naming 3-digit Numerals Using Arrow Cards

Place out the arrow cards for 200, 40, and 6.  Put the arrow cards together.  What number is that?  Similarly with other sets of three arrow cards, excluding the card for 10.

Place out the arrow cards for 700 and 60.  Put the arrow cards together.  What number is that?  Similarly with other sets of two arrow cards (for a hundreds number and a tens number).

Place out the arrow cards for 500 and 2.  Put the arrow cards together.  What number is that?   Similarly with other sets of two arrow cards (for a hundreds number and a ones number).

Place out the arrow cards for 400 and 18.  Put the arrow cards together.  What number is that?  Similarly with other sets of two arrow cards (for a hundreds number and a teen number).
